The shining opening music. The shining behind the scenes. The Shining is an effectively creepy if not that scary horror film. It's well made and beautifully filmed with amazing music. Jack Nicholson gives an incredible and iconic performance. Shelley Duvall gives a great performance and Scatman Crothers is really good in his small part. There's also some effectively creepy imagery. However, it's brought down by a pointless subplot and an overall lack of scares.

I was surprised by the fact that I didn't really like this movie because of the cult classic it's become. Boring is one word I'd use to describe it. Jack Nicholson's performance and a thrilling climax are highlights in a subjectively dull movie. The shining theme.
